ENHANCING MEDICAL TEACHING QUALITY: CANADIAN EXPERTS TRAIN FACULTY MEMBERS AT PHAN CHAU TRINH UNIVERSITY WITH ADVANCED SIMULATION METHODS
Inward Visits

On October 31, 2025, Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) successfully concluded the training course titled “Effective Simulation-Based Learning: Curriculum Design and Practical Applications,” which was delivered by experts from Alberta Children’s Hospital, Canada. This specialized training program aimed to enhance the teaching capabilities of medical and nursing faculty, equipping them with advanced pedagogical methods to provide high-quality learning experiences for students.

This year’s training, held over five days (October 27-31, 2025), followed the success of the first training session in September 2024, with direct guidance from a team of top experts from Alberta Children’s Hospital, including:

  • Dr. Elaine Sigalet, BN, PhD (Medical Education) – President of HealthCareSIM Dynamics
  • Dr. M. Ruth Connors, MD, FRCPC – President & Founder of Project Outreach
  • Angela Krizan, MBA, BN, RN – Clinical Training Manager & Strategic Initiatives, Alberta Health Services
  • Dr. Robertson Harrop, MD, FRCSC – Medical Education Master’s, University of Calgary
  • Dr. David Sigalet, MD, PhD, FRCSC – Co-founder of HealthCareSIM Dynamics
  • Dr. Ian Wishart, MD, FRCPC – Medical Simulation Instructor, Alberta Children’s Hospital
  • Dr. Catherine Ross, MD, FRCPC – SIM Medical Educator Faculty, Alberta Children’s Hospital

Over 40 medical and nursing faculty members, responsible for preclinical teaching at PCTU, participated in the program, seizing a valuable opportunity to improve their teaching skills and explore innovative learning methods.

Throughout the course, the Canadian experts introduced advanced teaching techniques, with a particular focus on clinical simulation in medical education. This method creates a realistic and interactive learning environment, allowing both instructors and students to practice and experience complex clinical scenarios without the risk of harm. Additionally, methods such as game-based learning were introduced, fostering an active, student-driven approach to learning and encouraging creative thinking.

The implementation of these methods not only helped faculty enhance their professional expertise but also inspired a shift in teaching mindset. Faculty members are now better equipped to create a dynamic learning environment that motivates students and encourages active participation. This approach transforms the traditional, one-way teaching model into an interactive, student-centered experience.

Faculty and students at PCTU have experienced a completely new teaching model, one that is simulation-based and internationally recognized, allowing students to engage with realistic preclinical scenarios early in their education. This hands-on approach helps students develop the professional competencies needed to succeed in their future medical careers.

This training program is part of Phan Chau Trinh University’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education according to international standards, ensuring that students receive a strong foundation of knowledge and are well-prepared for real-world medical practice. The skills and insights gained by faculty members will be applied to their teaching, creating a modern, effective, and inspiring learning environment for future generations of students.

The opportunity to learn in a simulation-based environment not only helps PCTU students develop comprehensive knowledge and skills but also nurtures essential qualities that will prepare them to become talented healthcare professionals capable of addressing the challenges of clinical practice in the future.

This training session serves as clear evidence of PCTU’s dedication to innovation and international-standard education, demonstrating a continuous commitment to enhancing the quality of medical training. It is also a significant milestone in the development of Phan Chau Trinh University, with the goal of becoming one of the leading medical education institutions in both Vietnam and internationally.
